4 Gründe das neue Garmin Softwareupdate auf dem Plotter durchzuführen

4 reasons to perform the new Garmin software update on your chartplotter

A software update for a modern chartplotter is usually always worthwhile. Especially since Garmin continuously develops its operating systems. This spring, there are the following important reasons to install the update:

1. Improved Overview by Merging AIS and Radar (MARPA)
If you have radar and an AIS receiver on board, it used to be common for the same vessel to be displayed twice on the chart – once as an AIS triangle and once as a radar target. With the latest updates, Garmin has introduced what is known as "AIS and MARPA Target Association". The system now recognizes when it is the same vessel and merges the data into a single symbol. This significantly reduces visual clutter on the display and facilitates safer navigation.

2. New Anti-Theft Protection with PIN Code (Screen Lock)
A very valuable feature from recent updates is the introduction of a PIN lock. You can now secure the chartplotter with a code (Screen Lock). This not only prevents unauthorized use of the device but also protects your personal data (keyword: secret fishing waypoints).

3. Enhanced Integration of Cameras, Engines, and Smartwatches
Garmin is continuously expanding the on-board ecosystem. If you use other technology, the update brings immediate benefits:

Cameras: There is now a significantly improved, dedicated video category. If you have cameras on board (e.g., Garmin Surround View), each camera now has its own tile and can be controlled independently and more intuitively.

Engines & Control: The updates include new compatibilities (e.g., for MAN marine engines, improved Mercury Precision Joystick displays) as well as extended control commands for bow thrusters (Garmin Force).

Voice Control: If you own a compatible Garmin marine smartwatch (like the quatix 8), new voice commands have been added to control the plotter directly from your wrist.

4. Important Bug Fixes and System Stability
Just like with smartphones, software errors can also creep into plotters. The current updates fix specific problems of the GPSMAP 923, such as occasional freezing sonar images during long use (e.g., in SideVü mode), display errors with depth shading, or errors in network synchronization when you have multiple devices connected. An update ensures that your system runs smoothly and crash-free on the water.
