Modern navigation on yachts and motorboats has developed rapidly in recent years. While plotters, radar, and AIS were once relied upon, today modern marine camera technology is increasingly being used for a seamless all-round view. Whether for difficult docking maneuvers, at night, or in dense fog – onboard cameras offer a decisive advantage in terms of safety and information.

The Most Important Basic Concepts of Marine Camera Technology

Before deciding on a system, it is important to understand the essential technical terms:

  • Analog Camera: The traditional form of video surveillance. The video signal is continuously transmitted via a coaxial cable. They are often more cost-effective, have no image delay (latency), and are suitable for connecting to older chart plotters without a network connection.

  • IP Camera (Digital): These cameras capture the image, digitize it, and send it as data packets over a network (LAN or WLAN) to the chart plotter. They offer the highest resolutions and can be seamlessly integrated into modern multifunction displays. A decisive advantage is the ability to display the images on various plotters on board.

  • Thermal Imaging Camera: This camera makes temperature differences visible, completely independent of lighting conditions. It "sees" a person's body heat in the water just as clearly as the warm engine block of another boat.

  • Low-Light Camera: In contrast to the thermal imaging camera, this technology requires a minimum of ambient light – such as the moon, stars, or the light from a distant harbor facility. The sensors capture this weak light and electronically amplify it into a visible image. However, they reach their limits in absolute, pitch-black darkness.

  • Infrared Illumination (IR LEDs): Many night vision cameras for close-range (e.g., in the engine room or for deck surveillance) have built-in infrared lights. They emit light invisible to the human eye, which the camera can see perfectly.

  • PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom): Cameras with this designation can be remotely controlled – they can be panned, tilted, and zoomed in.

  • Field of View (FOV): Indicates in degrees the size of the area covered by the camera. For rear-view cameras, a wide field of view is ideal for keeping the stern completely in view when docking.

What types of cameras are available for boats?

Different designs are used depending on the application area and mounting location:

  • Bullet Cameras: The classic, cylindrical shape (like the Raymarine IP camera shown in the image). They are easy to mount, often weatherproof sealed, and perfectly suited for monitoring the deck, engine room, or as a rear-view camera. Bullet cameras often have a sunshade, which minimizes glare.

  • Dome Cameras: These cameras are housed in a hemispherical dome. They are more compact, discreet, and less susceptible to damage from ropes or sails. PTZ cameras are also often hidden in dome housings.

  • Thermal Cameras: When the sun goes down, they show their strengths. They do not detect light reflections, but rather the thermal energy (heat) of objects. This makes other ships, buoys, or people in the water visible even in absolute darkness – a must for night cruises and rescue operations.

  • 360° SurroundView Systems: Similar to modern cars, the images from several cameras (e.g., from Eagle Marine) are combined into a bird's-eye view. This makes docking in tight slips a breeze.


  • Augmented Reality (AR): Manufacturers like Raymarine offer ClearCruise AR, a technology that merges reality with digital data. The live image from the onboard camera is overlaid directly with important navigation information on the display. Suddenly, AIS targets, waypoints, and navigation markers appear to float virtually in the real camera image. This greatly facilitates spatial orientation in complex traffic situations, as you no longer have to switch between radar, chart, and looking out the window.
